Welcome Long Ashton All Saints Scout Group

As a Scout Group we rely heavily on Volunteer Leaders to run the Group. The active participation of all parents and supporters in Scouting activities is essential if the Group is to be able to continue and thrive. We are actively seeking to recruit more leaders and supporters into the Group to ensure we can maintain and grow Scouting in Long Ashton for our rising youth population. Your commitment can vary from a few hours a year to a more regular monthly or even weekly commitment.

If you would like to get involved or would like to understand more about how you can get involved in Long Ashton Scouts please contact us.

The Group Executive Committee, which comprises of parents, supporters and the leaders, is responsible for the day-to-day administration of the Group including HQ maintenance and fund raising. The group are always keen to have new members and new skills on the committee, and rely on parents and other community volunteers to help in this way. If you are interested in helping please contact Simon Jones, Group Chairman.

What is Scouting?

Scouting is a global youth Movement, with over 30 million members worldwide, in almost every country in the world. Every night of the week over 100,000 people take part in Scouting. Locally in the Gordano District in North Somerset covering the towns of Nailsea, Clevedon, Portishead, Pill, Long Ashton, Backwell and Yatton over 1200 young people are active members of the Scout movement, meeting weekly to experience a huge array of activities to help develop them into good citizens for the future. These youngsters are supported by over 200 adults, who give their time freely and do an excellent job.

Scouting has enhanced the lives of an estimated 500 million young people since it was formed, including notable people such as: David Beckham, Bear Grylls, Michael Owen, Andy Murray, Barack Obama, Harry Potter actor Daniel Radcliffe, Astronaut Neil Armstrong, and many more.

The Long Ashton Scout Group

The Scout Group covers the Long Ashton Village and surrounding area. We welcome boys & girls and are made up of one Beaver Colony, one Cub Pack and one Scout Troop, providing activities for young people aged 6 to 14 years old.

So much of who we are as an adult is formed when we are kids’. ‘What Scouting says to people is: it's okay to go for it in life’. ‘Every child has a right to have an adventure. Life is about grabbing opportunities. The prizes don't always go to the biggest, the best and the strongest - they go to those who persevere. These are simple life lessons that Scouting teaches people.’

– Bear Grylls, Chief Scout

The Group is a registered charity and financially self-supporting. Our money comes from members’ subscriptions, and from fund raising. The Leaders are all volunteers. Training and selection is overseen by the Scout Association to ensure their suitability and competence. Training includes first aid, child safety, programme planning, camp leadership and much more. All adult leaders and helpers must undertake a Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) check to ensure their suitability.

We offer a wide ranging balanced programme for all ages and this includes activities such as – outdoor games, archery, sailing, kayaking, abseiling, hill walking, orienteering, not forgetting Scouting skills such as camping, map reading, pioneering and survival skills.

Being outdoors is important and much of the programme will include adventure in the area around Long Ashton and at the various facilities the Scout Association has locally, such as Glenny Wood the district camp site, which is located in Clapton in Gordano.

Scouting is inclusive and there are activities to suit everyone. Participation is key, we provide opportunities to meet new friends, learn new skills and be recognised for this. There are a wide range of Activity Badges and Challenge Awards, you can even participate in the Duke of Edinburgh award in Scouts.

No one will be excluded on the grounds of their financial circumstances. The Group Scout Leader can be approached on a strictly confidential basis if this is a concern.

Uniform – is what sets Scouting apart from other organisations and so it is an integral part of our identity. We expect Beavers, Cubs and Scouts to wear their uniform for many scouting activities but not all.
